How long does it take to sell a car?
Short answer
A private car sale often takes three to six weeks. Correctly priced cars in demand can sell in one to two weeks, while niche or overpriced cars can take months. With a dealer the deal can be done in one to three days, but at a lower price.

What affects the time to sell most?
Price, followed by the model's popularity, the quality of the listing, the season and how well condition and history are documented.
- Price: a correctly priced car often sells much faster – if nobody has been in touch after two weeks, the price is probably too high
- Model: in-demand family cars and SUVs generally sell faster than niche models
- Listing: good photos and complete information shorten the time to sell
- Season: spring and early autumn are often stronger, July and the winter months quieter
- Documentation: service history and ideally a condition test reduce the buyer's uncertainty
What timeframes are realistic?
Expect one to three days with a dealer and three to six weeks for a typical private sale.
| Situation | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Sale to a dealer | 1–3 days |
| In-demand car, right price, good listing | 1–2 weeks |
| Typical private sale | 3–6 weeks |
| Niche model, high price or weak season | 2–4 months or longer |
How can I sell my car faster?
Set the right price from the start, reply quickly and be flexible about viewings.
- Set the right price from day one – big price cuts later make buyers wonder why
- Publish the listing early in the week
- List in more than one place to reach more buyers
- Reply quickly – otherwise buyers move on to the next car
- Review the price if nothing happens within two to three weeks
- Be flexible about times for viewings and test drives
What do I do if the car is not selling?
Start with the price. If the price is right, review the photos and text and republish the listing with new photos.
If you need to sell quickly, you can always compare with offers from dealers. Read more in selling your car to a dealer.
