What is my car worth? How to set a realistic price

Short answer

Your car is worth roughly what similar cars actually sell for, not what they are listed for. Start from listings for the same model, model year and mileage, expect the private sale price to end up 5–15% below the asking price, and a dealer to pay a further 10–20% less.

Why won't I get the asking price?

The asking price is what the seller hopes for. After negotiation, the final price is often 5–15% lower.

Compare with cars that have actually sold where you can, and treat asking prices as a ceiling rather than the answer.

What affects my car's value?

Besides make, model and model year, mainly mileage, condition, service history, equipment and demand.

  • Mileage – lower mileage means a higher price
  • Condition – visible damage lowers the price, often by more than the repair costs
  • Service history – a complete service book is worth money
  • Equipment – for example a tow bar, an extra set of wheels and navigation
  • Demand – it varies over time, between models and fuel types, and between regions

Why do dealers offer less?

A dealer has real costs before the car can be resold – reconditioning, stock, financing, transport and warranty – plus a margin.

A dealer who buys a car for SEK 150,000 may need to spend another SEK 15,000–25,000 before it is ready for sale. A lower offer is not a sign that anyone is trying to cheat you.

How do I work out a realistic price?

Start from the typical price in comparable listings, subtract 5–15% for a likely private sale price and a further 10–20% for a likely dealer offer.

Example: similar cars are listed at around SEK 180,000. A likely private sale price is then roughly SEK 155,000–170,000 and a likely dealer offer roughly SEK 125,000–155,000.

Is it worth fixing damage before selling?

Fix what is cheap relative to how much it lowers the price, such as a cracked windscreen. Skip expensive work that buyers will not pay extra for.

A dent that costs SEK 5,000 to fix but only lowers the price by SEK 3,000 is rarely worth repairing.

Frequently asked questions

Are online valuation services reliable?
They are a good starting point but are based on averages. Always compare with current listings for cars in the same condition and with similar mileage.
How much room for negotiation should I build in?
Three to five percent is common. That lets you meet the buyer without going below your lowest price.
Does high mileage lower the value a lot?
Yes, mileage is one of the biggest factors. Well-kept cars with documented servicing lose less than cars without a history.
Does the season affect the price?
Demand varies. Spring and early autumn are often stronger periods for car sales, while July and the winter months tend to be quieter.
Why do offers from different dealers differ?
Dealers have different stock, customers and specialities. A dealer who knows they have buyers for your model can offer more. That is why comparing several offers pays off.
